Bettie Serveert

Formed in Amsterdam in the early 1990s around singer-guitarist Carol van Dijk and guitarist Peter Visser, Bettie Serveert operates within an indie rock/alternative rock register where taut guitars, pop melodies and a more abrasive tension intersect. After an initial period linked to the band De Artsen, Bettie Serveert took shape in 1990 and released Palomine in 1992, followed by Lamprey (1995) and Dust Bunnies (1997), three records that established a sound both direct, melodic and slightly rough. The rest of their discography shows continuity rather than rupture, with Private Suit (2000), Log 22 (2003), Attagirl (2005), Pharmacy of Love (2010), Oh, Mayhem! (2013) and Damaged Good (2016). Bettie Serveert also recorded Plays Venus in Furs and Other Velvet Underground Songs in 1998, an album of Velvet Underground covers that reveals their affinity for a drier, more minimal independent rock. Over the years, Bettie Serveert has toured Europe and North America, notably alongside bands such as Dinosaur Jr., Belly, Buffalo Tom and Superchunk, while evolving their rhythm section around the Van Dijk–Visser core.
