Admiral Freebee
Belgian singer-songwriter from the Antwerp region, Admiral Freebee—real name Tom Van Laere—has been working since the early 2000s in a rock vein informed by folk, blues and Americana. The name Admiral Freebee refers to a cargo ship mentioned in a Tom Waits song and represents a project that alternates slow ballads, rougher electric tracks and melodic songwriting centered on voice and guitar. Discovered at Humo’s Rock Rally in 2000, Admiral Freebee quickly moved from local clubs to Belgium’s larger stages and then to tours across Europe, including opening slots for acts such as dEUS and Neil Young & Crazy Horse. His debut album, simply titled “Admiral Freebee,” was released in 2003, followed by “Songs” (2005) and “Wild Dreams of New Beginnings” (2006), which confirmed his guitar-based rock rooted in the Anglo‑American tradition. He continued with “The Honey & The Knife” (2010), “The Great Scam” (2013) and “Wake Up and Dream” (2016), on which arrangements and a taste for direct song formats became more pronounced. With “The Gardener” (2022), Admiral Freebee extends this solo trajectory, blending classic rock, American influences and introspective songwriting tied to the Belgian indie scene.
