Crown Lands
Formed in Oshawa, Ontario, the Canadian duo Crown Lands brings together singer-drummer Cody Bowles—of Mi’kmaq and African descent—and multi-instrumentalist guitarist Kevin Comeau. Active since the mid-2010s, Crown Lands craft a rock sound steeped in progressive music, 1970s hard rock, and psychedelic blues, with occasionally long compositions, muscular riffs, and a high, soaring voice at the center of their sound. Early independently released recordings put the band on Canada’s rock venue and festival circuit, before a self-titled studio debut arrived in 2020, followed by the acoustic EP Wayward Flyers Volume 1 the same year and the EP White Buffalo in 2021. With the 2023 album Fearless, Crown Lands double down on their progressive leanings through a science-fiction narrative while continuing a sustained focus on Indigenous themes, Canada’s colonial memory, and environmental issues. On stage, the duo channels its energy into a dense, physical performance, aiming to recreate with just two players a sonic spectrum often associated with larger ensembles—an approach that shapes Crown Lands’ aesthetic identity.
