Ex:Re

Launched in London by Elena Tonra, Ex:Re extends in solo the intimate writing developed within Daughter, of which she is the singer and guitarist. This project, which emerged in 2018, sits in a register of indie rock, alternative folk and atmospheric pop, with songs centered on voice, guitar and restrained arrangements, often leaner than those of her main band. Ex:Re first gained prominence with the single Romance, and then with the album Ex:Re, released in 2018 on 4AD, conceived with producer Fabian Prynn and enriched by string arrangements signed by Josephine Stephenson. The repertoire explores a restrained writing, consisting of slow ballads, hushed textures and a discreet tension between folk, indie rock and ambient pop. On stage, Ex:Re notably promoted this debut album during live gigs and a session published under the title Live at Hoxton Hall in 2019. Alongside Daughter, Elena Tonra uses Ex:Re as a more direct framework, where the composition moves forward through simple melodic lines, silences, occasional piano and measured orchestrations. Ex:Re thus remains associated with a form of introspective songwriting, rooted in the contemporary British indie scene.
