Info

Vancouver’s 54-40 plays Oshawa on June 27, 2026 at BOND|ST Event Centre, with a set that traces four decades of Canadian alt-rock built on clear guitars and melodic hooks. Formed in 1980 by singer-guitarist Neil Osborne and bassist Brad Merritt, the band emerged from the local independent scene and took its name from the “54-40 or Fight” slogan, a wink to a contested border that anchored their early identity. The group’s early post-punk and new wave leanings gradually shifted toward a more tuneful alternative sound, close to college rock and shaded with folk and roots. Albums like Set the Fire (1984), the major-label turn of 54-40 (1986) and Show Me (1987), then Dear Dear (1992), Smilin’ Buddha Cabaret (1994) and Casual Viewin’ (2000) mark out a steady focus on songs with direct choruses and unforced momentum. With guitarist and keyboardist Dave Genn joining in the mid-2000s, 54-40 settled into a stable lineup that continues to write and tour, balancing a contemporary approach with the band’s melodic core. On stage, they move easily between the sharper edges of the early years and later, more expansive alt-rock.
