Kim Mitchell
Canadian guitarist, singer, and songwriter Kim Mitchell was born in 1952 in Sarnia, Ontario, and first made his mark in the mid-1970s as the leader of the rock band Max Webster, active on the Toronto scene and on North American tours. With Max Webster, Mitchell developed a style that blended high-energy rock, progressive touches, and a keen sense of the hook, often in collaboration with lyricist Pye Dubois. After the band split in 1981, Mitchell launched a solo career with a self-titled EP in 1982, followed by the 1984 album Akimbo Alogo, where his rock leaned toward a more melodic, radio-friendly format. This was followed by Shakin’ Like a Human Being (1986), Rockland (1989), the live I Am a Wild Party (1992), Aural Fixations (1992), Itch (1994), Kimosabe (1999), Ain’t Life Amazing (2007), and The Big Fantasize (2020), produced with Greg Wells. Rooted in rock and hard rock with a pop sheen, Mitchell alternates electric riffs, a direct vocal delivery, and accessible structures while remaining tied to the aesthetics of the 1970s and 1980s. Alongside his work on stage and in the studio, Mitchell also became a radio host in Toronto in the early 2000s, reinforcing his long-standing presence in the Canadian musical landscape.
