April Wine
Formed in 1969 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, before relocating to Montreal, April Wine established itself in Canadian rock with a blend of melodic hard rock, FM rock, and electric ballads centered on Myles Goodwyn’s voice and guitar. Founded around the Henman brothers and Goodwyn, the group moved quickly through the 1970s with a run of albums that defined the April Wine signature, including April Wine (1971), On Record (1972), and Electric Jewels (1973), where harmonized guitars and choruses geared toward rock radio came into focus. The second half of the decade saw April Wine consolidate this approach with Stand Back (1975) and First Glance (1978), while expanding North American touring alongside other rock bands of the same generation. In the early 1980s, The Nature of the Beast (1981) and Power Play (1982) marked a phase in which April Wine heightened the contrasts between forceful riffs and slower compositions; songs such as Just Between You and Me, I Like to Rock, and Sign of the Gypsy Queen occupy a central place in the band’s repertoire. After a hiatus in the late 1980s, April Wine returned to recording in the early 1990s with Attitude (1993) and Frigate (1994), and subsequently continued mainly as a live act, with a revolving lineup around Goodwyn and a repertoire rooted in melodic rock and classic hard rock.
