Elie Semoun returns with Cactus, a new chapter in which stand-up broadens without erasing his characters. For thirty years he has blended precise writing with stage audacity; here he pushes his observation of everyday life further by alternating confessional moments and fully enacted scenes. Jean Abdul, his alter ego, opens the evening before a gallery of portraits: a son accompanying his father on a nursing-home visit, a man with a disability introducing his partner to his mother-in-law, a parent coming to terms with their child’s transition, a karate instructor consumed by prejudice, and pieces that probe sexual harassment and religion.

Cactus exposes our blind spots, speaks about intolerance, taboos and injustices, with a biting irony that stings without affectation. Elie Semoun rediscovers his taste for characters while establishing a more direct, more confrontational voice, in a form that slips from stand-up to sketch seamlessly.
