Sylvie Vartan
Born in Iskretz, Bulgaria, in 1944 and settled in Paris with her family in the early 1950s, Sylvie Vartan established herself in the yé-yé scene as early as 1961 with “Panne d’essence”, recorded with Frankie Jordan. She then developed a French pop repertoire influenced by twist, rock’n’roll and adaptations of Anglo-American songs, written in a direct, melodic style that defined the 1960s. Tracks such as “La plus belle pour aller danser” (1964), “Comme un garçon” (1967), “La Maritza” (1968), “2 min 35 de bonheur” (1968) and “Irrésistiblement” accompanied this period across 45-rpm singles, television, tours and music-hall stages. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Sylvie Vartan moved toward a more orchestrated, stage-oriented pop variety while retaining a rock and soul foundation. Her career also intersected with Johnny Hallyday in the duet “J’ai un problème” (1973), and with songwriters such as Serge Gainsbourg, Charles Aznavour and Pierre Barouh. Alongside her musical career, Sylvie Vartan maintained a steady acting presence in film and television.
