Fuel

Formed in the mid-1990s in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Fuel established itself on the American rock scene by blending post-grunge, alternative rock, and melodic hard rock. The band coalesced around guitarist and songwriter Carl Bell and vocalist Brett Scallions, initially through self-released EPs, before signing to a label and releasing Sunburn in 1998, marked by saturated guitars, catchy choruses, and a balance between high-energy tracks and ballads. Fuel deepened this approach on Something Like Human (2000) and Natural Selection (2003) while touring extensively on the U.S. rock circuit. Lineup changes—most notably Brett Scallions’ departure and eventual return ahead of Angels & Devils (2007) and Puppet Strings (2014)—punctuated the band’s evolution, as Fuel shifted its sound between heavier and more melodic shades without straying from a vocals-forward guitar-bass-drums core. Beginning in 2020, Carl Bell revived Fuel with a new lineup and steered the project toward more contemporary songwriting, realized with the 2021 album Ånimo, while remaining close to the 1990s–2000s American alternative rock codes that shaped the band’s identity.
