Lauren Spencer Smith
British-Canadian singer-songwriter Lauren Spencer Smith was born in 2003 in Portsmouth, England, and grew up on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where she developed a repertoire spanning pop, soul, and voice-led ballads. Initially active on YouTube and social media with covers recorded in an intimate setting, she gradually turned to her own material, marked by introspective lyrics about relationships, breakups, and coming of age. In 2019, she released the live album Unplugged Vol. 1, which highlights her stagecraft and her way of placing the voice at the center of stripped-back arrangements. Her appearance on season 18 of American Idol in 2020, where she reached the top 20, further broadened her audience and ushered in a more international chapter of her career. From 2021 onward, tracks such as Fingers Crossed, Flowers, and Narcissist made their mark across the online pop landscape, confirming Spencer Smith’s move toward direct, melodic writing focused on immediate emotions. With the 2023 album Mirror, she brings these singles together with new compositions in a contemporary pop set dominated by piano-and-voice ballads and an aesthetic akin to atmospheric R&B.
