Maria BC

Based in Oakland, California, Maria BC has been developing since 2020 a sound that sits between introspective folk, ambient and chamber songwriting, with a vocal approach shaped by mezzo-soprano training and a taste for muted textures. She introduced this language on the EP Devil’s Rain in 2021, where acoustic guitar, subtle pads and minimalist arrangements frame a voice often suspended, hovering between whisper and liturgy. This initial cycle was followed by Hyaline in 2022, released on Father/Daughter Records, and by Hyaline Remixes later that year. In 2023 Maria BC joined Sacred Bones Records and released Spike Field, an album that extends this aesthetic while adding sharper contrasts between folk sparseness, ambient and more experimental forms. Alongside her solo records, Maria BC has collaborated with Rachika Nayar, appearing on her debut album and joining her touring band. Maria BC’s trajectory is thus situated within an American independent scene where song, drone, atmospheric music and timbral exploration intersect.
