Black Coffee
Rooted in the South African house scene, Black Coffee has developed since the early 2000s an approach to deep house that blends local rhythms, slow tempos and soul textures. Born Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo in Umlazi, then based in Mthatha before moving to Durban, he studied music and first became known as part of the afro-pop trio Shana, and later through the Red Bull Music Academy in 2003 in Cape Town. Black Coffee launched his solo project with the album "Black Coffee" in 2005, released on his label Soulistic Music, followed by "Have Another One" in 2007 and "Home Brewed" in 2009, which established his signature as a DJ and producer between minimal house, soulful vocals and afro influences. With the live album "Africa Rising" in 2012 and "Pieces of Me" in 2015, Black Coffee expanded his reach beyond South Africa, increased touring and secured a lasting place on international club and festival stages, notably in Ibiza. The project "Subconsciously", released in 2021 and marked by collaborations with artists such as Drake, David Guetta and Usher, confirmed Black Coffee's global orientation while remaining rooted in an afro-house and deep house aesthetic focused on repetition, groove and a sparing use of vocals.
