Emmanuel Jal

Born in Tonj, in what is now South Sudan, Emmanuel Jal has built his musical trajectory between East Africa—where he partly grew up in Kenya—and Canada, with Toronto among his anchor points. His work is rooted in hip-hop, featuring rap shaped by East African rhythms and touches of soul, reggae and pop, with lyrics often focused on experiences of conflict, exile and reconstruction. Emmanuel Jal emerged in the early 2000s with Gua in 2004, then followed with Ceasefire in 2005, a project made with Sudanese musician Abd El Gadir Salim that puts rap, Sudanese traditions and singing in dialogue. Warchild in 2008 further broadened his international audience, while See Me Mama (2012) and The Key (2014) continued a more open formula blending hip-hop, contemporary African music and melodic choruses. In 2018 he released Naath with his sister Nyaruach, then Shangah in 2022. Present on stages associated with hip-hop, world music and engaged cultural events, Emmanuel Jal has developed since the beginning an oeuvre in which personal narrative, multilingualism and political commitment remain closely linked.
