The War And Treaty

The War and Treaty is the married duo Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Blount-Trotter, who came together in Albion, Michigan, in the mid-2010s. Their music blends country, soul, gospel, folk and rhythm and blues within an American roots aesthetic built around their voices, harmonies and the ongoing musical dialogue between the two singers. Tanya Blount-Trotter had previously pursued an R&B career, while Michael Trotter Jr., a former service member, develops songwriting shaped by soul, traditional country and spirituals. The War and Treaty first established themselves on the Americana circuit with Down to the River in 2017 and Healing Tide in 2018, before moving more clearly toward Nashville and the country scene. With Hearts Town (2020) and Lover’s Game (2023), they extend this mix of roots music, gospel fervor and more contemporary formats, while maintaining an approach focused on storytelling, couplehood and vocal expression. The War and Treaty thus operate across the Americana, soul and country scenes, in a register where the power of the voices remains central.
