Tyler Childers

Rooted in the rural landscapes of Kentucky, Tyler Childers has developed a songwriting style deeply shaped by Appalachian culture and by American country, folk, and bluegrass. Born in 1991 in Lawrence County and raised in Paintsville, he began singing at a young age in a religious setting before writing his own songs as a teenager. After a self-released debut album, Bottles and Bibles in 2011, he gradually established himself on the regional and then national scene through extensive touring and with the release of Live on Red Barn Radio I & II, a live compilation issued in 2018 from 2013 sessions. The 2017 album Purgatory, co-produced by Sturgill Simpson and David R. Ferguson, marked a turning point, asserting a sound that blends acoustic ballads, honky-tonk influences, and bluegrass energy. Childers continued along this path with Country Squire in 2019; the largely instrumental, socially engaged project Long Violent History in 2020; the triple concept album Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? in 2022; and Rustin’ in the Rain in 2023, all while regularly performing and recording with his band, The Food Stamps.
