MEROL

Born in Dordrecht in 1991, MEROL, whose real name is Merel Baldé, has developed a Dutch‑language musical project at the crossroads of electronic pop, synthpop and cabaret‑tinged songwriting. Based in Amsterdam after studying at the Toneelschool & Kleinkunstacademie, she began her career as an actress in theatre, television and film before gradually focusing on music. MEROL came to attention at the end of the 2010s with a series of singles in a direct, ironic tone, including “Lekker met de meiden” (2018), which placed her within a Dutch pop scene that plays on humour, explicit sexuality and observations of everyday life. Her writing addresses gender relations, intimacy, partying and social pressure, set to productions with danceable rhythms, retro synth lines and simple choruses often conceived for the stage. MEROL’s debut album, “Troostprijs” (2022), extends these themes while introducing more introspective lyrics. Active on club and festival stages in the Netherlands and Belgium, she also continues audiovisual appearances; her videos and performances retain a strong theatrical dimension inherited from her acting training.
