De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig
Founded in Amsterdam in 2005, De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig brings together producer Bas Bron and rappers Willie Wartaal, Vieze Fur and Faberyayo around Dutch-language hip-hop shaped by electro and R&B. The group emerged with the single “Watskeburt?!”, which immediately established a style of writing based on wordplay, twisted expressions and a form of absurdity deeply rooted in the Dutch language. This approach appears on Parels Voor De Zwijnen (2005), De Machine (2008), De Lachende Derde (2010), Ja, Natúúrlijk! (2013), Manon (2015), Luek (2018), Anders (Different) (2018) and Moderne Manieren (2023). In De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig, Bas Bron’s synthetic beats intersect with very distinct flows—between spoken phrasing, sung hooks and more staccato rap—with as much emphasis on the rhythm of the words as on the melodies. Over the years, De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig has also become a regular on the Dutch and Belgian festival circuit, appearing at events such as Lowlands, Pinkpop and Rock Werchter, while developing parallel projects tied to their wider universe, like Baksteen and Le Le.
