David Eugene Edwards

Born in Englewood, Colorado, David Eugene Edwards has, since the early 1990s, developed a songwriting voice situated between alternative rock, folk rock, country rock and gothic country, with a central emphasis on American traditions, religious hymns and a dark tension drawing as much from post‑punk as from old‑time music. Edwards first came to prominence with 16 Horsepower, a Denver‑formed band whose voice and identity he carried through to the early 2000s with albums such as Sackcloth ’n’ Ashes (1995), Low Estate (1997), Secret South (2000) and Folklore (2002). Parallel to — and after — the band’s end, he continued this trajectory with Wovenhand, a more personal project where spiritual fervour, spare folk, electric guitars and ritual atmospheres converge, notably on Woven Hand (2002), Consider the Birds (2004), The Threshingfloor (2010), The Laughing Stalk (2012) and Star Treatment (2016). He also joined Crime & the City Solution in 2012, recorded Risha with Alexander Hacke in 2018, and released Hyacinth under his own name in 2023. Across his work, Edwards’s possessed vocal delivery, biblical imagery and an austere yet mutable approach link his various projects into a single continuity.
