Lili Refrain

Based in Rome, Italian musician Lili Refrain has developed since the mid‑2000s a solo project at the crossroads of experimental rock, ritual music and a form of dark psychedelic folk. A guitarist, singer and multi‑instrumentalist, she constructs repetitive, hypnotic pieces live by layering vocal motifs, guitar parts, percussion and electronic elements to create atmospheres ranging from incantatory ballads to passages close to atmospheric metal. Her first full‑length album appeared in the late 2000s, followed by several releases that gradually established her on the European underground scene, where her concerts take the form of immersive performances focused on the body and the voice. With the album Mana in 2020, and Nagalite in 2022, Lili Refrain refined an aesthetic in which influences from Mediterranean traditional music, extreme music, repetitive minimalism and film score elements mingle in often long compositions structured by a buildup of tension and trance. Her work circulates as much within experimental rock circles as within electronic and improvised music networks, allowing her to move between clubs, festivals and venues devoted to performative practices.
