Charles Webster
Born around 1965 in Matlock, Derbyshire, Charles Webster grew up in the Peak District before spending time in Derby and Nottingham. In the early 1980s he began playing in electronic bands and worked as a sound engineer. During that period he crossed paths with Detroit figures such as Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. He moved to San Francisco in 1992 and launched the label Love From San Francisco. Returning to the UK in 1996, he founded Remote and later Miso Records, building an extensive discography under his own name and several aliases, including Presence, Furry Phreaks, DJ Profile and Love From San Francisco. Webster's music ranges between deep house, downtempo and trip hop with jazz inflections, often written with an emphasis on texture, slow groove and soulful vocals. Notable releases include All Systems Gone (1999) as Presence, Born on the 24th of July (2001), Remixed on the 24th of July (2003), No Lucky Days (2013) with Peter Wraight as the Webster Wraight Ensemble, and Decision Time (2020). He has also recorded tracks with Terra Deva, Sara Jay, Shara Nelson, Steve Edwards and Delroy St. Joseph, and remains active on the UK and international house and electronic scenes.
