Walk Off the Earth
Based in Burlington, Ontario, Walk Off the Earth formed in the mid-2000s around Gianni Luminati Nicassio and Ryan Marshall, later joined by singer-guitarist Sarah Blackwood, drummer Joel Cassady and keyboardist Mike “Beard Guy” Taylor. The band occupies a space between indie pop, pop rock and folk, often featuring acoustic arrangements, tight vocal harmonies and touches of reggae. Initially independent, they released early covers and original songs online until they achieved major visibility in the early 2010s through a series of collaborative videos and their adaptation of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know,” which led to a deal with a major label. This resulted in the album R.E.V.O. in 2013, followed by Sing It All Away in 2015 and Here We Go! in 2019, with original material taking an increasingly prominent role alongside covers. On stage, Walk Off the Earth has toured internationally and played numerous festivals, maintaining an aesthetic based on collective playing, frequent instrument-swapping among members, and a constant blend of web culture with more traditional pop formats.
