The Northern Pikes

Formed in Saskatoon, in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, The Northern Pikes are rooted in late-1980s alternative rock and pop rock, with songs built around clear guitar lines, melodic choruses, and writing that borrows as much from college rock as from power pop. The band came together in 1984 around Jay Semko, Bryan Potvin, and Merl Bryck, before the arrival of drummer Don Schmid, and initially released two independent EPs, The Northern Pikes in 1984 and Scene in North America in 1985. Signed later to Virgin, The Northern Pikes broadened its audience with the albums Big Blue Sky in 1987, Secrets of the Alibi in 1988, Snow in June in 1990 and Neptune in 1992, a period when its direct, melodic rock circulated widely on Canadian and North American stages. After a split in 1993, The Northern Pikes reformed in the late 1990s for the compilation Hits and Assorted Secrets 1984-1993 released in 1999, then resumed touring and recording steadily with Live in 2000, Truest Inspiration in 2001, and It’s a Good Life in 2003. The band also collaborated with Les Stroud on the Long Walk Home EP in 2007, extending a career marked by a continuity of writing and a clear rock identity, balancing band energy with a sense of melody.
