The Orb
Founded in London in the late 1980s by Alex Paterson and Jimmy Cauty, The Orb emerged from the British electronic scene during the rise of acid house and chill‑out rooms. Soon refocused around Paterson, the project adopted a loose collective form, at times including Kris Weston, Andy Hughes and Thomas Fehlmann. The Orb developed an ambient house that combined atmospheric pads, slow rhythms, collage‑like effects and borrowings from dub and reggae, often producing long, evolving tracks intended both for home listening and for the ends of nights in clubs. Early albums, including “The Orb’s Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld” (1991) and “U.F.Orb” (1992), established an aesthetic of spatial textures, sampled voices and repeating motifs that remained central to the group's discography. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s The Orb explored variations on this language, moving into more abstract forms or into directions closer to minimal techno and sound‑system culture, and opened up to occasional collaborations—most notably with David Gilmour on “Metallic Spheres” (2010) and Lee “Scratch” Perry on “The Orbserver in the Star House” (2012). Still active on stage, The Orb translates its studio work into audiovisual performances in which improvisation and live processing of sounds extend the contemplative and playful approach that has characterised the project since its beginnings.
