The Wedding Present
Formed in Leeds, England, in the mid-1980s around singer-guitarist David Gedge, The Wedding Present emerged from the British indie rock wave associated with the C86 movement, defined by fast, taut, melodic guitars, close to jangle pop and shot through with noise-rock accents. The band made its mark on the UK independent circuit, garnered extensive radio play, and released a run of recordings that blended matters of the heart, everyday vignettes, and plain-spoken writing. The Wedding Present issued their debut album, “George Best,” in 1987, followed by “Bizarro” in 1989 and “Seamonsters” in 1991, produced by Steve Albini, which heightened the darker, more abrasive edge of their songs. The records “Watusi” (1994) and “Saturnalia” (1996) signaled a more experimental phase before the group paused in the late 1990s, with Gedge continuing under his Cinerama project. The Wedding Present resurfaced in 2004 and resumed regular activity, touring and releasing new albums including “Take Fountain” (2005), “El Rey” (2008), “Valentina” (2012), and “Going, Going…” (2016), with a frequently refreshed line-up yet always centered on David Gedge, who maintains the band’s aesthetic throughline of melodic indie rock, post-punk energy, and intimate songwriting.
