Sophie Hunger

Born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1983, Sophie Hunger, the stage name of Emilie Welti, has since the mid-2000s developed a career that sits between folk, indie pop, jazz, singer-songwriter and authorial rock, with a multilingual writing in English, French, German and Swiss German. After early work in projects such as Fisher and Superterz, she released in 2006 the self-produced album Sketches on Sea, then quickly broadened her audience with Monday’s Ghost in 2008. Her music pairs a deep, supple voice with arrangements that move between guitar, piano, discreet rhythms and an approach often open to improvisation, nourished by affinities with the jazz scene. Sophie Hunger evolves this frame across albums, from 1983 to 2010 to The Danger of Light in 2012, then Supermoon in 2015, where folk, pop and more dynamic textures cross. With Molecules in 2018 and Halluzinationen in 2020, Sophie Hunger pushes further a minimalist and electronic writing, without breaking with the melodic dimension of her beginnings. Parallel to her European tours, she also composes for cinema, notably for Der Freund in 2008 and My Life as a Zucchini (Ma vie de Courgette) in 2016, and collaborates occasionally with artists such as Erik Truffaz, Max Herre, Faber and Dino Brandão. Based in Berlin after growing up between Bern, London, Bonn and Zurich, Sophie Hunger occupies a singular place in the European music space through this constant circulation between song formats, sonic exploration and composition work.
