Sigur Rós
Founded in 1994 in Reykjavík, Sigur Rós develops an atmospheric post‑rock that blends long guitar washes, ambient influences and a compositional approach close to minimalism. The band is built around Jón Þór “Jónsi” Birgisson and bassist Georg Hólm, with the lineup expanded over time to include several drummers and keyboardists, notably Kjartan Sveinsson and Orri Páll Dýrason. Sigur Rós’s pieces rely on stretched structures, slow dynamic shifts and a falsetto voice sung in Icelandic or in an invented phonetic language, often paired with string and brass arrangements. The studio discography includes, among others, Von (1997), Ágætis byrjun (1999), the untitled album often referred to as ( ) (2002), Takk… (2005), Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (2008), Valtari (2012), Kveikur (2013), the orchestral work Odin’s Raven Magic (recorded in 2002 and released in 2020) and Átta (2023). Sigur Rós has also developed a significant visual body of work with the concert films Heima (2007) and Inni (2011), and maintains a regular international touring presence, adapting its material from an expanded rock trio to collaborations with classical ensembles and choirs.
