Owen Pallett

Born in Mississauga, Ontario, Owen Pallett has built a career in Canada that sits between artful composition and independent pop, with violin, voice and string arrangements at its core. Initially active on Toronto’s scene in bands such as Les Mouches and later alongside The Hidden Cameras and Arcade Fire, Pallett launched his solo career under the name Final Fantasy with Has a Good Home (2005) and He Poos Clouds (2006), before abandoning that alias in 2009 to release work under his own name. His music blends chamber pop, indie pop, orchestral pop and electronic touches, in a format where string motifs, repetitive structures and melodic writing converse with more experimental forms. This trajectory is evident on Heartland (2010), In Conflict (2014) and Island (2020), albums that shift his work toward either broader orchestrations or, conversely, more stripped-down arrangements. Alongside his records, Pallett works regularly as an arranger, orchestrator and composer for other artists, contributing to projects by Arcade Fire, Beirut, The Last Shadow Puppets, The National and Frank Ocean, and to film — notably Her (2013) with Arcade Fire, as well as The Box (2009) and Life (2015). Owen Pallett thus occupies a distinctive place between songwriting, string writing and film music.
