Shlohmo
Under the name Shlohmo, Californian Henry Laufer creates electronic music that sits between downtempo, instrumental hip-hop, ambient and experimental R&B, characterized by a taste for misty textures, slowed rhythms and dark atmospheres. Born in 1990 and associated with the Los Angeles scene, Shlohmo emerged in the late 2000s in the wake of the American independent beatmaking movement, first with the EP Shlo‑Fi (2009) and then with Bad Vibes (2011), an album that established a denser, more introspective approach to composition. His trajectory has since alternated between solo productions, DJ sets and selected collaborations—most notably with the Wedidit collective and the joint project No More with Jeremih in 2014—where his abrasive, vaporous approach converses with contemporary R&B. With Dark Red (2015), Shlohmo emphasized a more confrontational dimension, at times approaching industrial and noise, while retaining his attention to melody and space, a progression he continued on The End (2019). He thus moves between clubs, electronic stages and more introspective formats, in a register where the sound material remains central.
