Selah Sue

Between soul, reggae and pop, Selah Sue has been developing a songwriting style since the late 2000s that is both melodic and rhythmic, carried by a deep, flexible voice. Born in 1989 in Louvain, Belgium, Sanne Putseys began composing as a teenager on guitar in English. She was noticed online, performed on small local stages, and later signed with the Because Music label. Her debut studio album Selah Sue, released in 2011, established a world where acoustic ballads, reggae grooves and touches of hip‑hop coexist, quickly giving the artist visibility beyond Belgium. In 2015 the album Reason broadened her sonic palette toward more electronic and R&B production while maintaining a soulful foundation, and included collaborations with artists such as CeeLo Green and J. Cole. With Persona in 2022, Selah Sue addressed issues of identity and mental health in a more direct way, alternating intimate tracks with more driving songs. On stage she adapts her songs to formats ranging from stripped‑down voice-and-guitar sets to denser arrangements, highlighting the blend of reggae syncopation, soul harmonies and pop structures that characterizes her music.
