Hooverphonic
Formed in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, in 1995 around Alex Callier and Raymond Geerts, Hooverphonic began under the name Hoover before quickly adopting Hooverphonic. Initially associated with trip hop, the band soon expanded its writing to encompass electronica, dream pop, indie pop and alternative rock, with a marked taste for orchestration, cinematic atmospheres and songs with carefully crafted melodies. The debut album A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular (1996) set this foundation with “2Wicky,” which gained wide attention through the film Stealing Beauty. With Geike Arnaert on vocals from 1997, Hooverphonic refined a broader sound on Blue Wonder Power Milk (1998), The Magnificent Tree (2000) and Hooverphonic Presents Jackie Cane (2002), before exploring an orchestral format on Sit Down and Listen to Hooverphonic (2003). They continued with No More Sweet Music/More Sweet Music (2005) and The President of the LSD Golf Club (2007). After several changes of singers, notably Noémie Wolfs and later Luka Cruysberghs, Hooverphonic reunited with Geike Arnaert in 2020. The band represented Belgium at Eurovision 2021 with “The Wrong Place,” and went on to release Hidden Stories (2021) and Fake Is the New Dope (2024).
