Unsane

Formed in New York in the late 1980s, Unsane is part of the American noise rock and post-hardcore scene, characterized by an abrasive sound of repetitive riffs, a heavy rhythm section and strained vocals. The trio, centered on guitarist and singer Chris Spencer, first made its mark on the New York underground circuit and later drew attention through indie labels Amphetamine Reptile and Matador, at a crossroads of hardcore, alternative rock and DIY culture. The debut studio album, Unsane (1991), established the foundations of a raw aesthetic, followed by Total Destruction (1993) and Scattered, Smothered & Covered (1995), which continued this blend of noise, punk and heavy rock. In the late 1990s and early 2000s Unsane released Occupational Hazard (1998) and Blood Run (2005), then Visqueen (2007), Wreck (2012) and Sterilize (2017), alternating intensive touring with periods of withdrawal. Unsane’s lyrics often focus on images of urban violence, alienation and social exhaustion, reinforced by a direct, no-frills sonic approach that places the band in the roughest strand of American indie rock.
