Romare
Under the name Romare, British producer and DJ Archie Fairhurst has been developing an approach to electronic music since the early 2010s inspired by the visual collages of African‑American artist Romare Bearden, whose name he adopts as his pseudonym. Based in London, Romare drew attention with maxi singles released on the Black Acre label — notably “Meditations on Afrocentrism” (2012) and “Love Songs: Part One” (2013) — where he assembles samples of jazz, blues, soul and other African‑American music over structures blending slow house, broken beat and downtempo. Later signed to Ninja Tune, Romare released the album “Projections” in 2015, extending this work of rhythmic reworking and sonic montage, followed by “Love Songs: Part Two” in 2016 and “Home” in 2020, which places greater emphasis on played instruments and more melodic atmospheres. Alongside his studio work, he has developed a stage format that moves between DJ set and electronic live performance, adapting his tracks for clubs and festivals while keeping at the centre of his writing the relationship between African‑American musical heritage, dancefloor groove and contemporary electronic textures.
