Richard Hawley
Born in Pitsmoor, in the north of Sheffield, Richard Hawley has since the early 2000s built a solo discography closely tied to his city, spanning orchestral pop, rockabilly, crooner ballads, nocturnal folk and rock with denser textures. After beginnings with Treebound Story at the end of the 1980s, Hawley joined Longpigs in the 1990s and later toured with Pulp, while developing work as a session musician and producer. This path nourishes a precise melodic writing, marked by songs from the 1950s and 1960s, clear guitars, hushed arrangements and a direct way of sounding urban nostalgia. Under his own name, Richard Hawley released Richard Hawley and Late Night Final in 2001, Lowedges in 2003, followed by Coles Corner in 2005 and Lady’s Bridge in 2007, two albums that have durably established his universe. Truelove’s Gutter appeared in 2009, before the broader and electric turn of Standing at the Sky’s Edge in 2012, followed by Hollow Meadows in 2015, Further in 2019 and In This City They Call You Love in 2024. In parallel, Hawley collaborates with Nancy Sinatra, Arctic Monkeys, Elbow, Manic Street Preachers, Lisa Marie Presley or Paul Weller, and also composes for cinema and stage, notably with the musical adaptation of Standing at the Sky’s Edge.
