Jarvis Cocker

Born in Sheffield in 1963, Jarvis Cocker first gained attention as the singer and principal songwriter of Pulp, a band formed in the late 1970s and associated with the britpop wave and an independent rock informed by pop, disco and new wave. After the 1990s—marked by albums such as His ’n’ Hers and Different Class—Cocker developed a solo trajectory in which writing remains central, blending social commentary, dry irony and intimate narratives delivered in an often spoken-sung vocal style. His records Jarvis (2006) and Further Complications. (2009) continue this approach on a rock and pop axis, while Room 29 (2017), made with pianist Chilly Gonzales, explores a more minimal, narrative form of song. With the JARV IS... project, realized on the album Beyond the Pale (2020), Cocker moved toward a more psychedelic and electronic sound, developed on stage before being recorded. Based in London, he divides his time between music, radio work on BBC Radio 6 Music, occasional film collaborations and editorial projects that extend his detached perspective on pop culture and everyday life onto the page.
