Mikael Simpson
Danish musician and songwriter Mikael Simpson has, since the late 1990s, developed a body of work that sits between intimate chanson, indie rock and electronic experiments informed by dub and ambient. First noticed as a member of the band Luksus, he later pursued a solo career in which writing in Danish plays a central role, with a delivery often halfway between speaking and singing and highly narrative lyrics. Simpson’s music rests on slow rhythms, repetitive basslines and synthetic washes that create a melancholic, introspective atmosphere while retaining an accessible pop grounding. Across the 2000s and 2010s he multiplied projects within the Danish independent scene, alternating full-band shows with more minimal formats and appearing at festivals across Scandinavia and beyond. A regular collaborator of producer Trentemøller, Simpson contributes both in the studio and on stage within contexts close to electronic music. Alongside his songwriting, he composes soundtracks for Danish film and television and publishes texts that extend his work as a lyricist.
