Monika
Born in Athens in 1985, Monika, the stage name of Mónika Christodoúlou, has developed since the late 1990s a career situated between folk rock, indie pop and touches of blues. Monika began to gain recognition in 1999 as part of Serpentine, her brother’s rock band, where she sang and also played guitar and saxophone; after the group split in 2004 she continued as a solo artist. Her songwriting relies on melodic, direct songs carried by a clear voice and by acoustic or pop instrumentation that can also include piano, accordion and drums. Her discography includes the albums Avatar (2008), Exit (2010) and Secret in the Dark (2014), as well as the EP Primal (2013), all released on Archangel Music. Over the years Monika has performed on several important stages in Greece, notably at the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, the Lycabettus Theatre and at the ARK festival in Athens and Thessaloniki, situating her work on a path that links the Greek independent pop scene to a broader songwriting format.
