Ginuwine

Born Elgin Baylor Lumpkin in Washington, D.C., and raised in Forestville, Maryland, Ginuwine rose to prominence in the 1990s at the crossroads of contemporary R&B, soul and a hip‑hop scene that was evolving rapidly. He first belonged to the Swing Mob collective, where he crossed paths with Timbaland and Missy Elliott — collaborations that proved decisive for his career. With Ginuwine... The Bachelor in 1996, propelled by “Pony,” he established a formula built on a supple voice, sensual delivery and off‑kilter productions that refreshed R&B at the time. He continued in that vein with 100% Ginuwine (1999) and The Life (2001), before moving toward a smoother, more ballad‑oriented sound on The Senior (2003), Back II da Basics (2005), A Man’s Thoughts (2009) and Elgin (2011). His catalogue also includes A Ginuwine Christmas (2011). Alongside his solo work he joined Tank and Tyrese in the trio TGT, which released Three Kings in 2013. Active both onstage and in the studio, Ginuwine occupies a lasting place in American R&B, balancing slow‑jam heritage, pop hooks and a direct vocal approach.
