Mariah Carey
Born in Huntington, New York, and raised on Long Island, Mariah Carey rose to prominence at the turn of the 1990s with pop and R&B writing centered on voice, harmonies and ballads, before gradually expanding her range toward soul, hip-hop and more urban productions. Discovered with her debut album Mariah Carey in 1990 and then Emotions in 1991, Carey subsequently followed with Music Box in 1993, Merry Christmas in 1994 and Daydream in 1995, a period during which her vocal technique, use of the high register and her songwriting helped define part of the pop and R&B sound of the decade. From Butterfly in 1997 and Rainbow in 1999, Carey intensified the dialogue between pop singing, contemporary R&B and hip-hop, notably by collaborating with producers and rappers from the scene. After a somewhat unstable phase in the early 2000s, she found renewed broad appeal with The Emancipation of Mimi in 2005, then continued with E=MC² in 2008, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel in 2009, Caution in 2018 and several projects related to her Christmas repertoire. Author and co-producer of a large part of her catalog, Mariah Carey has also developed a lasting live presence through tours, Las Vegas residencies and seasonal concerts, while All I Want for Christmas Is You, released in 1994, has endured as one of the titles most closely identified with her name.
