Júníus Meyvant
Born on the island of Heimaey in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago south of Iceland, Júníus Meyvant — born Unnar Gísli Sigurmundsson — has developed a songwriting style that blends indie folk, soul and orchestral pop. He first drew attention in the mid-2010s with a handful of tracks released online, later collected on a self-titled EP in 2015; even then his melodies were carried by a warm voice, string and brass arrangements, and a taste for retro atmospheres. His debut full-length, Floating Harmonies, was released in 2016, followed by a deluxe edition in 2017 and Floating Harmonies Live in 2018, which documents on stage the balance between slow ballads and more rhythm-driven songs. In 2019 he broadened his palette with Across the Borders, which accentuates soul colors and expansive orchestrations while retaining songwriting centered on acoustic guitar. The album Guru, released in 2022, continues this exploration of a nuanced pop-folk, situated between 1960s–70s influences and contemporary sensibility. Frequently touring Iceland and Europe, he adapts his songs in concert with variable line-ups — from solo sets to an expanded band — and over the years has established himself as a distinctive presence on today’s Icelandic scene.
