Karl Blau
Emerging from the independent scene in Anacortes, Washington, Karl Blau has since the mid-1990s built a career as a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer characterized by autonomy and self-releasing, before relocating to Philadelphia after more than two decades in the American Northwest. His music moves between indie rock, country, folk-rock and country-rock, with detours into muted soul, blues, rocksteady, bossa nova, dub and drone, often presented in flexible, shifting formats. His discography begins in 1996 with the cassettes Doin' Things the Way They Happen and Blue Nomad and expands with albums such as Beneath Waves (2006), Dance Positive (2007), Nature's Got Away (2008), Zebra (2009), Introducing Karl Blau (2016), Out Her Space (2017), Scream Time (2022) and Vultures of Love (2024). Karl Blau has also performed with groups like The Microphones, D+ and Your Heart Breaks and has worked with musicians associated with the Washington scene, notably Phil Elverum, LAKE, Earth and Laura Veirs. In parallel, he long maintained a hands-on publishing practice with Kelp! Monthly, later known as KLAPS.
