Jeangu Macrooy

Born in Paramaribo, Suriname, in 1993, Jeangu Macrooy first develops his musical path in his homeland, notably within the project Between Towers with his twin brother Xillan, before moving to the Netherlands in 2014 to study songwriting at the ArtEZ Conservatory in Enschede. His solo trajectory takes shape after his meeting with producer Perquisite, with whom he releases the EP Brave Enough in 2016, followed by the albums High on You in 2017, Horizon in 2019 and Summer Moon in 2022. Jeangu Macrooy's music blends contemporary soul, pop, and eclectic inflections, with a supple and frontal voice, arrangements ranging from intimate writing to more open forms, sometimes touched by disco and electronic influences. Based on Dutch stages, Jeangu Macrooy has performed at festivals such as North Sea Jazz and Lowlands, while also touring in Germany, Belgium and France. His name expands further when he represents the Netherlands at Eurovision in 2021 with Birth of a New Age, a track marked by the use of sranan tongo. Parallel to his musical career, Jeangu Macrooy also works for the stage and screen, with roles in musical productions in the Netherlands, continuing a path where personal writing, soul, and exchanges between Suriname and Europe play a central role.
