JID
Born in Atlanta in 1990, rapper JID—real name Destin Choice Route—situates himself within the American South’s hip-hop scene by blending technically adept rap with jazz, soul, and trap textures. Initially active in the Spillage Village collective alongside EarthGang in the early 2010s, JID drew attention with a string of independent projects before signing to J. Cole’s Dreamville Records. His debut studio album, The Never Story (2017), laid the groundwork for a style in which rapid flow switches, dense writing, and melodic structures take center stage. DiCaprio 2 (2018) continued these explorations with a darker, more segmented rap, marked by intricate production and targeted collaborations within the Dreamville orbit and Atlanta’s scene. He then multiplied collective appearances, notably on the compilation Revenge of the Dreamers III (2019) and on Spillage Village’s Spilligion (2020), which anchored him in a more choral aesthetic spanning gospel, R&B, and alternative hip-hop. With The Forever Story (2022), JID refined a narrative universe centered on biography, family, and social tensions, confirming an approach to rap where vocal virtuosity, attention to arrangements, and regional grounding combine into cohesive musical writing.
