J. Cole

Between Fayetteville, North Carolina and New York, J. Cole develops a rap rooted in introspective, narrative writing, shaped by his background between a military environment and working‑class neighborhoods. Born in 1985 in Frankfurt, Germany, Jermaine Lamarr Cole gained attention in the late 2000s with a string of mixtapes before joining Jay‑Z’s Roc Nation in 2009. His debut studio album Cole World: The Sideline Story was released in 2011, followed by Born Sinner (2013) and 2014’s Forest Hills Drive, which established J. Cole in a register that blends boom‑bap heritage, soul and Southern rap influences. 4 Your Eyez Only (2016) and KOD (2018) deepened a more conceptual vein, while The Off‑Season (2021) synthesizes a style where introspective pieces, high‑energy tracks and technically focused performance songs coexist. A long‑time producer of his own work, J. Cole has built around his label Dreamville Records a collective that includes rappers and soul/R&B singers, expanding his presence through tours, collaborative projects and appearances on major international hip‑hop stages.
