Andrew Bird

Born in Lake Forest, Illinois and long tied to the Chicago scene, Andrew Bird since the 1990s has developed a career at the crossroads of folk, indie rock, jazz and chamber pop. A classical violinist, singer and multi-instrumentalist, Andrew Bird first drew notice within swing and jazz ensembles, notably with Squirrel Nut Zippers, before leading Andrew Bird’s Bowl of Fire, a project where swing revival, American folk and eccentric writing intertwined on Thrills (1998), Oh! The Grandeur (1999) and The Swimming Hour (2001). After this collective period, Bird refocused his music toward a more personal form with Weather Systems (2003), then asserted a more distinctly indie folk sound on The Mysterious Production of Eggs (2005) and Armchair Apocrypha (2007), where violin, singing and whistling occupy a central place in arrangements built by repetitive layers. The rest of his discography extends this approach by opening it to leaner or more orchestrated writing depending on the projects, from Noble Beast (2009) to Break It Yourself (2012), Are You Serious (2016), My Finest Work Yet (2019) and Inside Problems (2022). Andrew Bird has also pursued parallel work for film and television, collaborated with Fiona Apple, Jimbo Mathus or Madison Cunningham, and released several trio or collaborative recordings, confirming a trajectory where American tradition, chamber composition and independent rock formats intersect.
