Wilco
Formed in Chicago in 1994 following the breakup of Uncle Tupelo, Wilco coalesced around Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt, with a lineup that evolved over the years and ultimately settled as a sextet. Initially rooted in alternative country and Americana on A.M. (1995), Wilco quickly broadened its scope with Being There (1996) and Summerteeth (1999), where folk‑rock songwriting mixed with more crafted pop and denser arrangements. The band's trajectory turned more experimental with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002) and A Ghost Is Born (2004), albums that combine restrained melodies, electric tension, noisy textures and the legacy of American rock. Wilco also contributed to the Mermaid Avenue project with Billy Bragg in 1998 and 2000, setting previously unpublished Woody Guthrie lyrics to music. The arrival of guitarist Nels Cline in 2004 reinforced a freer dimension both live and in the studio, audible on Sky Blue Sky (2007) and on subsequent albums from The Whole Love (2011) to Cruel Country (2022) and Cousin (2023). Straddling indie rock, folk, alternative rock and country, Wilco have toured American and European stages since their inception with a repertoire that alternates intimate songwriting, improvisation and sonic exploration.
