Whitney
Born from the meeting of Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek in Chicago, Whitney took shape in the mid‑2010s from the ashes of Smith Westerns, of which Kakacek was a member, while Ehrlich had notably come from Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Built around this songwriting core, Whitney functions as a duo in the studio and an expanded ensemble on stage, moving between indie rock, folk, and gentle soul. The debut album, Light Upon the Lake (2016), established a sound defined by Julien Ehrlich’s falsetto, clear‑toned guitars, and melodic brass arrangements, favoring slow, luminous songs. Whitney extended this intimate approach with Forever Turned Around in 2019, deepening personal themes and hushed textures, then explored the covers format on Candid in 2020, a set of reinterpretations that subtly make varied repertoires their own. With Spark in 2022, Whitney nudged their palette toward a broader pop sensibility while retaining the tender melancholy and melodic simplicity that run through the band’s catalog, shaped largely across North American and European independent scenes.
