Ikonika
Born in Sheffield as Sara Abdel-Hamid, Ikonika has been developing an electronic language since the late 2000s that sits between bass music, dubstep and UK garage. Her writing favors clean melodic lines, angular rhythms and an approach that is often more synthetic than confrontational. Ikonika emerged in 2008 on the Hyperdub label with the 12" Please / Simulacrum and quickly became part of the London scenes linked to Rinse FM and the shifting forms of dubstep. Her first album, Contact, Love, Want, Have, was released in 2010, followed by Aerotropolis (2013), Distractions (2017) and The Library Album (2018). Across these records and shorter formats like I Make Lists EP (2012), Position EP (2014), and Hollow EP and Bodies EP (2020), she has steered her music toward a more flexible electronics where dry basses, motifs close to futuristic R&B and structures derived from British club music intersect. Associated with Hyperdub and later Planet Mu, Ikonika also works as a DJ, producer and vocalist, maintaining a constant link between melodic exploration, club culture and more introspective listening formats.
