Estrella Morente
Born in 1980 in Las Gabias near Granada, Estrella Morente grew up in a flamenco environment shaped by her father, the cantaor Enrique Morente, and the dancer Aurora Carbonell. Trained early in singing and stagecraft, she performed as a teenager in peñas and Andalusian festivals before attracting attention on Spain’s major flamenco stages in the late 1990s. Her debut album, Mi cante y un poema (2001), affirmed her commitment to traditional flamenco, and the same year she released Calle del Aire, featuring a more intimate repertoire. With Mujeres (2006) she paid tribute to the female voices of song and flamenco, while Autorretrato (2012) synthesised different facets of her artistic trajectory. The 2014 album Amar en Paz, recorded with guitarist Niño Josele, broadened her singing toward bossa nova and Latin American music. Estrella Morente’s voice — at the crossroads of cante jondo, copla and popular song — belongs both to the classical palos of flamenco and to more orchestrated film projects, notably her vocal contribution to Pedro Almodóvar’s Volver. Through international tours, occasional collaborations with Latin jazz musicians and a steady presence at flamenco festivals, she has developed a career that links Grenadian heritage with contemporary openness.
