Carminho

Born in Lisbon in 1984 as Maria do Carmo de Carvalho Rebelo de Andrade, Carminho comes from a family closely linked to fado—her mother is the fadista Teresa Siqueira. Trained from a young age in Lisbon’s fado houses, she sang as a teenager in venues such as A Taverna do Embuçado, and later refined a repertoire rooted in traditional fado while opening it to Portuguese song and Brazilian musical styles. After early appearances in the early 2000s and a participation in Carlos Saura’s film Fados (2007), she released the album Fado in 2009, followed by Alma (2012), Canto (2014), Carminho Canta Tom Jobim (2016), Maria (2018) and Portuguesa (2023). Across these records Carminho developed a sober, precise approach centered on the voice, where fado engages in dialogue with bossa nova, MPB, jazz and a more contemporary songwriting. She has also engaged in notable collaborations with artists such as Pablo Alborán, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, Marisa Monte, Maria Bethânia, António Zambujo and Tribalistas, navigating between the Portuguese scene, the international fado circuit and transatlantic projects.
